Yahoo! World Cup 2006 site breaking records

The official Yahoo! FIFA World Cup 2006 site attracted more than five million unique visitors on the opening day of the FIFA World Cup 2006 (June 9), and continues to record an average of 4 million unique visitors everday.
The site served more than 400,000 video streams on the opening day and averages approximately 375,000 streams per day since then. This exclusive content, coupled with development in streaming technologies and the proliferation of high speed Internet services across the world have ensured that the World Cup 2006 site would be more successful than that of World Cup 2002, four years ago.
It’s another example of how millions of users worldwide turn to the Internet at big events, and provides furthur proof to advertisers that Internet advertising is as effective as TV advertising in live sports events. Plus, the site generates traffic from the target audience before and after the match too.
When Yahoo! announced its sponsorship of the World Cup, there were concerns on whether or not it would be a worthwhile investment.
Surely, Yahoo! are now generating considerable advertising and sponsorship revenue from the site’s big success. And winning new, non-Yahoo! users.
