Women seen as an ‘untapped’ Internet market

Just as there are magazines and TV channels dedicated to Arab women, there are websites which cater to their interests.

Up until a couple of years ago, research and website stats showed that males were more active on the Internet than females in Arab countries.

To me, these numbers were baffling, seeing as the females are more ‘communicative’ than males and therefore Internet services such as email, chatting, messaging and telephony are suited more to females.

Apparently, females are now demonstrating their Internet power, ensuring that Saudi-based site Hawaa World is a top ten Arab site in every major Internet market. It now attracts advertisers from all over the region.

Accordingly, Maktoob.com has thrown its hat into the ring, with Maktoob Women, sponsored by Nestle, and it’s expected that other portals will follow.

So, at the moment, marketers are taking aim at Arab women on the Internet. It should be interesting to see how this plays out.
