I think it is a good idea, simple. It says a real Italian food, they use a famous Italian characters in a funny way to say that. I like the look of the gangster guy. Love the art direction much.

Beautifully art directed italian cliches.
There’s far more to the Italian image than mafia bosses and big fat mama opera singers.
And more contemporary.

Creative rules dont get it, you didnt like the use of Italian mafia bosses? Didnt you do something similar for Barilla pasta?

Amre,
Quite right, but what’s important here is that we did it first last year. (They were purposely contemporary and not old fashioned cliched 30’s style gangster images.)
You’ll also notice Dozero from Strategies was very quick to show us all the site where our pasta ads were shown. Which makes me think that Strategies have…..dare I say it?
LOL

Again I am not working for strategies,
Just i searched for Barilla pasta ad from Amre’s post and i found that link, and it is enough.
But you pushes me to comment on it:
I think the both ads(sbarro and Barilla) are clishes but,
the first using “clished characters” which i call “famous characters” to link to the original taste of Italian food with a good art direction and the line could be much better.
Barilla ad has many mistakes if we pass the stock photo of the mafia man, the pasta on the wall behind him “very bad placement”, the cliche layout. We will find a major mistake.. The line over the pasta which says ” Would you serve THE WRONG pasta to this guy”… THE WRONG pasta, and it has been written over the pasta itself…what a shame. Not only this but also its meaning who you are targeting ?? housewife!! she should be afraid of? her husband “SAB3 EL BROMBA RAGOL AL MAFIA” .. Oh my God i have to end of this …
Is that make me working at strategies?!! LOL

Dozero,
1. The pasta above the ad is not Barilla pasta. (it’s the competitors)
2. In retrospect I agree the art direction could’ve been better. Maybe we should’ve had the portrait in black and white and the pasta and logo in color. But hey it’s always easier in hinesight.
3.That wasn’t a stock photo. That was a real mafia guy. We flew to Palmero in Sicily and unfortunetly he had to shoot the photographer and my best art director afterwards for security reasons.
Thanks for your valuable input. And so beautifully written.

It was a valid question Amre.
We did the Barilla ad over 18 months ago and did it in a fresh contemporary way. Since then I’ve seen several ads using mafia association for italian products. (Maybe it’s a coincedence)
Hence the reason why I called it a cliche.
23. dozero | July 22nd, 2008 at 5:18 pm
What is fresh and contemporary in it?
Mafia association for italian products has been done over 18 years not months.
Are you sure the mafia guy shoot the art director ?!! Because I still see a crap ads from Y&R amman
24. Creative Rules | July 22nd, 2008 at 6:11 pm

Or are you too embarrased to tell us.
25. Maissy | July 24th, 2008 at 8:55 am

The ads above or dozero being too embarrased to tell us where he works?
LOL
