Does Zidane drink? Kronenbourg think so.
August 23rd, 2006 Zeid Nasser (Admin)
To begin with, I typically never blog about alcohol advertising.
Our blog is, after all, called Ad Blog Arabia
However, I will make one or two exceptions a year, and this is one of them.
Just look at this Kronenbourg Beer advertisement. If you were living on the face of this earth on 9 July, then you will have witnessed the now famous ‘Zidane Heabutt on Materazzi’ in the World Cup 2006 Final.
Well, Kronenbourg show you what Zidane did in the dressing room afterwards to cool-down.
Next question: Does Zidane drink? Should Kronenbourg have sought his permission for this ad?

You said it yourself, it is Ad Blog Arabia, not Ad Blog Islam!
It isn’t just that you can find people following other religion than Islam while being Arabs, but you can also find many Arabic muslims who are not really religious and would find some interests in Alcohol ads.
2. Khaled | August 23rd, 2006 at 3:51 pm
well a muslim who drinks is not really a muslim. i never considered zidane so long ago. i have no prob with christians drinking or jews drinking, its normal for them. but shame for a muslim who drinks. anyway hope Allah open their eyes and guide them to real islam.
a muslim that drinks is such a shamful figure. sorry to see that.
3. Riz | August 23rd, 2006 at 8:42 pm
Zidanne is proud French and then anything else. I am sure he drinks Kronenbourg after all it is one hell of a beer. Crisp, ice chilled - oooo can’t resist…..reaching for my fridge now.
4. The Observer | August 24th, 2006 at 11:23 am
Khaled, you said “well a muslim who drinks is not really a muslim”!
How can you judge people like this?
Are you a perfect muslim?
Do you follow all of the rules and have never sinned?
Do you consider Zidane drinking alcohol more shameful than his barbaric attitude of attacking the Italian player with his head in front of millions of people around the world?
5. Samer Marzouq | August 24th, 2006 at 11:33 am
Are we sure that this is Zidane? Look closely at his face he might someone who looks like him.
6. Aymen | August 24th, 2006 at 6:31 pm
It’s obviously not Zidane but a look-alike. Zidane is a believer in Islam as he told to the French press, and he also would ask for a lot of cash to be on any advert.
Kronenbourg should have asked his permission to picture an obvious impersonnification of himself.
7. The Observer | August 25th, 2006 at 12:33 pm
Ayman, how many Islam believers who drink alcohol are there?
The are plenty, as there are plenty of Muslims who do other mistakes. No one can take his whole religion literally and follow every aspect of it. It doesn’t make him a fake Muslim.
If you like to continue our discussion abut Muslims drinking alcohol, you can go to my blog, I wrote a post about it:
http://www.thearabobserver.blogspot.com/
8. Zeid Nasser (Admin) | August 25th, 2006 at 4:11 pm
FINALLY !
Yes, AdBlogArabia is a site where we can discuss the influence of religion on advertising, but not launch into a full scale discussion of ‘who is a Muslim’.
You will note that I let the conversation go on, without removing any of your comments…. but, now it’s time to take this chat somewhere else.
Unless, of course, you want to say something about Zidane not giving his persmission to Kronenbourg (like Aymen’s post)!
9. The Observer | August 25th, 2006 at 7:43 pm
Sorry Zeid, you are right. It is a total different subject. It was just triggered by your words of trying to avoid Alcohol advertisment because your blog name is AdBlog *Arabia*.
Anyway, if anyone wants to continue this discussion can more to my blog.
Have a nice day…

Two notes: Although Islam and alcohol do not relate, they are interrelated in the modern world. Turks break their fast with beer in Istanbul (and elsewhere I’d bet). Christians are not supposed to drink either, but with time comes evolution and many point out that Jesus did make wine from water, etc… but there’s a huge chunk of Christians that say no to alcohol.
But more to the point here, that does look an awful lot like Zidane’s head, it’s hard to mimic. I think there is something afoot here. When this head-butting thing happened there was lots of speculation as to why. Maybe some folks in France wanted to hear Zidane sing out some “He offended my faith song” as to why he reacted as he did. I suspect there was a thought that maybe they’d just kick that Algerian to the curb now that he’s retired, ugly as that is.
Add into that this thought: I’m betting that you can “parody” a famous figure throughout Europe. It’s common in the West. You don’t need to seek permission if it’s a famous figure.
Here, we have Zidane the “hot-head” head-butting footballer cooling off after the match. So, it’s parody.
But maybe some were curious to see if Zidane would react much as he did on the pitch: angrily. And maybe he’d sing out: “you are offending my religious values” with your parody.
As far as I’m aware he did not, much as he did not bring religion very far into comments regarding his actions in the match.
It could seem a bit like they are dangling a red cloth in front of the bull — at least I’m betting some were thinking that — curious to see if they could upset him.
I think, if taken on the surface, the ad is amusing and enjoyable. It’s good not to dig too far into Zidane’s response that day. It was what it was.
Seen on the deeper level — that it could almost be regarded as a taunt in some fashion: Are you European or are you a Muslim — it’s a bit more disturbing.

LikeZidane.com displays the act of the World Cup of Soccer Headbutt heard around the world by French player Zinedine Zidane on Italian player Macro Materazzi.
The site contains comical and real media, videos, files, games, and more on the event.

So Zidane does practice Islam, he can still drink alcohol you know? One can be a proud Muslim yet drink alcohol, how hard is it to accept that?
Anyway, it’s non of anybody’s business, now the man has got to be judged for his private life? He’s achieved so much already, and people still want to stop and question if the bloke drinks beer or not. Crazy really.
At least he’d be considered a moderate Muslim this way…which reminds me, HAPPY HOUR JUST STARTED HERE! WOHOOO!
13. Myriam | September 8th, 2006 at 10:44 pm
Well, Zidane is a non practising muslim. I dont think he drinks.
14. Victoria | September 9th, 2006 at 12:39 am
Zidane is secular. He was born into a Muslim family, but he doesn’t practice Islam. So yes, he drinks alcohol, there is nothing wrong with that.
15. halil | October 14th, 2006 at 1:28 pm
I have seen late but informer said Turks break their fast with beer. How can u say that. I am a Turk and I daresay there are Turks who drink alcohool like other Muslim countries but I have never seen or heard that any Turk breaks fast with beer. This is ridiculous. Besides, lots of them quit drinking during ramadan.
16. Abdullah | April 8th, 2007 at 11:00 am
Just to clear things up with the user named “the observer.” A lot of people rip the word “Muslim” completely out of context. To be a “muslim” means literally “one who believes” (namely in Allah). If one chooses to drink alcohol, then they disobey the word of Allah. Allah asks his creation to fear him. If his creation doesn’t fear him, then he/she doesn’t believe in him clearly. Therefore, they are not a Muslim.

35. ramy | July 2nd, 2007 at 11:28 pm
zidane as we all know fellow morocans and tunisians and all over the world that zizou is 1 of the best football not if best in the world his capacities are far beyond expected and can complitly change the rhytme of a game as he has done in the euro 2004 in portugal vs england but when it comes to personal things such as commercials and advertising the the only thing i can say is that you cant judge a book by it cover…
36. momo | July 18th, 2007 at 5:33 am

39. Majeed | August 14th, 2007 at 6:43 pm
First of all this picture is of a look alike zidane. The real zidane has a receding hair line and this guy has a full head of hair and just shave his hair.
Second of all there is not getting around it Muslims dont drink. If zidane drinks then its his personal choice. Whether or not he conforms to islam is his choice. I dont drink but i know alot of Muslims who do.
Third Arab does not = Muslim.
Third zidane is not barbaric, everyone has limits most nationalities are greatly offended by any references about their mothers or sisters, arabs/ french are not excluded from the equation.
Last Fighting over the internet is like the special Olympics if you win your still retarded.
40. AHMAD | August 17th, 2007 at 4:36 am
its imposiple that is zizou drink some thing like this
41. Laily | August 19th, 2007 at 8:33 pm
You guys Zidane doesnt drink. Gawd. After he headbutted Martazzi (or whatever his name is) He needed something cold to put on his head. If I bump my head and I put frozen meat on my head then that doesnt mean I am eating frozen meat. Who ever made this “blog” is just trying to start stupid rumors.
42. blah | September 14th, 2007 at 2:31 pm
Its not even ZIdane in the ad, Look at his head. Its clearly not his, their is shaved hair all the way around, but Zizou doesn’t have any on the very top of his head and the shirt isn’t even right.
43. Arab4Life | September 23rd, 2007 at 8:17 am
It is Zidane.
OK so Zidane drinks…what is the big deal anyway? He is a muslim but doesn’t go to the Mosque every friday, brag like a hypocrite about praying and fasting, or tell his wife to cover her face. No one cares if you think whether others should follow “Islam” because its not your religion but the type of person you are. Why is it OK for Christians/Jews to drink but not for Muslims? do you think you are better than them? I’m arabic (my dad is muslim) and I sure as hell don’t think that anyone is better than others due to his/her religion. If you think so then shame on you, move to saudi arabia, pray and fund terrorism, get 72 virgins (its remarkable that the virgin trick works). Its the type of person YOU are not what you claim to follow, wake up and shave.
Zidane is a legend and beat Brazil in ‘07. Materazzi is a horse faced worldclass diver. Yes they both held the worldcup: except one scored two goals to earn it, the other dived.
44. Vira | September 28th, 2007 at 1:41 am

45. HaYu | September 28th, 2007 at 1:14 pm

zidane is the best in the world he is better than all the world players
54. Mike Aneke | January 5th, 2008 at 8:01 am
Ha ha ha…That’s definitely NOT Zidane but was quite clever. I will give you one clue: Zidane’s bald patch on his crown area is natural and anyone could see that the hair follicles are dead but in this advert, the area that’s bald was actually shaven. Furthermore, who would bring bottles of beer in a dressing room preparatory to a match, let alone, a World Cup final?
Nice try Kronenbourg but that’s not Zizou.
55. Paulo | January 9th, 2008 at 10:01 pm
Its clearly not him….look at his eye brows….different shape
56. vakas | January 12th, 2008 at 2:09 am
The prophet Muhammed stated that the main cause for a muslim to loose his faith is if he drinks alcohol. So if the best footballer off all time does drink then we can not say that he is not a muslim, what we can say is he is not a very good muslim.
I have heard and read many times that zizou is mulim. As far as i know he was born into a muslim family however i have not once untill today heard him come out and accept that fact and promote his belif in Allah and his final messenger Muhammad PBUH in the open. I dont think he is a practising muslim i.e. prays namaz, fasts, goes to them mosque. Do we even know if his wife is muslim? If not then his marrage does not count and in islam that comes under adultry, which has sevre consequences.
Also when this picture is “suposeadly” taken is after his sending off after the world cup final. Him to have a beer in the changing room is absolutly obsured. I play amature football and i get paid for playing and there is no way in hell can you get alcohol into the changing room. And here this blog has been created about a player with a beer after a world cup final.
Whether he is a good muslim or not is up to Allah to decide as we can not judge him. We muslims should be proud to have someone from our religion who is loved by billions who follow this beautiful game depite the fact that we have some so called muslims like Bin Laden and co. who give this great religion a bad reputation. He is a role model for the muslim people regarless off his action. All we can do is pray to Allah, the almighty, is too guide him and everyother muslim on the right path. Ameen!
57. Youness | January 26th, 2008 at 4:01 pm

You people are so retarded man who the hell are you to judge who is Muslim and who is not GOD is one! Quron may not be 100% true in the modern days its impossible to never drink, or eat pork even by accident. As long as you believe in god, and commit no murder/suicide or wish bad upon others or do evil things you are a Muslim, and a good person. Zidane is Muslim if he was born Muslim, and if he except to be Muslim you are no GOD to say Zidane is not Muslim, or not a good person.
