Coca Cola changing color??

June 13th, 2006 Humeid

Watching the world cup over the past few days I noticed something weird. The Coca Cola logo is appearing in all sorts of colors, besides the usual red. I noticed the usage of blue, yellow and green already! Has anyone out there noticed this?

It’s really strange. I looked around the web to find any info or picture but could find any. Will we soon see blue Coke cans? (can you even imagine that!).

UPDATE: The mystery is apparently solved. And I feel a bit, what shall I say, “absent minded”. It the colors of the teams shirts for each particular game! Thanks go to Eddie for pointing this out!

Yeah, I have noticed that too, It is pretty strange I would say. I just cannot imagine all sort of colored cans, although I must admit that is kind of cool to see.

I think the color scheme is really poor ….their pitch-side advertsing is barely identifiable when watching the world cup on TV and when the cameras are at a wide angle it is unrecognisable as being our good old friends from coke …….

Don’t panic, everyone, we probably won’t be seeing odd-coloured cans… it’s all part of Coca-Cola’s football strategy that started with their sponsorship of the English Football League (the three division directly beneath the Premiership).

When they launched the partnership, their visual campaign placed the distinctive script of Coca-Cola in the colours of each of the 72 teams invovled – each banner became the Coca-Cola presence at that club’s stadium. So, the pitchside ads for Coca Cola at Leeds United’s Elland Road ground would only ever appear in white, blue and yellow, not the more traditional red and white – which for us Leeds fans are the colours of the despised Manchester United.

It’s obviously Coke’s way of ingratiating themselves with each club and so avoiding the perils of club partisanship, which has damaged the sales of products with close ties to certain clubs. For instance, when Manchester United launched their deal with Vodaphone, it was reported that there was a total of 30,000 subscription cancellations in Yorkshire and Liverpool over one weekend!

you know several years back coke tried a marketing strategy where they changed the color of the coke cans to purple to see what people would do. People actually shut the door & thought they were out of coke and it was unsold bc people only associate the color with the product. So I doubt we will be seeing any color changes on cans anytime soon..

    for the teams!

I see, it could get pretty fugly though. I dunno whether I would like to see Coca Cola in Yellow, Green or even Blue. Blue is official for Pepsi of course! hehehe

Bass seriously, imagine a blue Coke can…
now THAT would make something! hehehe

Advertising wise i might agree that the guys at Coca Cola decided to do an ” ingratiating ” job with the soccer teams.

Branding wise, i doubt this is the only reason behind the Coca Cola colors . I see they are planning for a more vibrand dynamic cans. Yahh as omar just said ” Imagine a blue coca cola can!” does it realy hurt ? you got to consider there will be a variant scheme of colors . Oh poor pepsi the guys at pepsi will look so ” conservative - only one color ” . again the ” FINAL woRd CUP” goes to teh compnay that will be listening to the ” CSDs customers “, their trends and their prefernaces . How much do they make their purchasing decisions based ont he color of the can ! . and i doubt it so much that coca cola had missed out this homework , other wise how come they launched the blak coca !?
