A study by BBC, Reuters, and The Media Center has revealed that more people trust the media than their governments, especially in developing countries.
The opinion poll was carried out in ten countries. Trust in media was highest in Nigeria (88% vs 34% gov’t.) followed by Indonesia (86% vs 71%), India (82% vs 66%), and Russia (58% vs 54%).
In Egypt, the question regarding the degree of trust in government was not asked. Why? You’ll have to ask BBC and Reuters! But, anyway, trust in the media stands at a whopping 74%.
And, peculiary, the US and the UK were the only countries where people trusted their government more than the media! That explains a lot doesn’t it.
Here’s a comprehensive press release on the study, at the GlobeScan website.

Reports suggest that the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) is pulling out of the Middle East, saying that “the market required extraordinary resources.”
It’s good news for BPA Worlwide who have been making in-roads into the Middle East.
So far, it seems ABC are pulling out of print audits, but not online audits which it pioneered in the region through its agreement with AMEInfo.com last year.
BPA have also, recently, entered the field of online audits in the Middle East, starting with Al Bawaba.com.
Here’s the BPA Worldwide website.

An Ipsos poll has confirmed Al Arabiya as the number one news channel in Saudi Arabia.
The news channel, part of MBC group, enjoyed a 4.9% increase over its competitor - Al Jazeera - in viewership throughout the Kingdom, bringing it to a current viewership rating of 24.2%.
Furthurmore, and quite controversially, the poll shows that 99% of those surveyed ‘would like to watch Al Arabiya’ compared to 79% who ‘would like to watch Al Jazira’.
There’s something for marketers to think about!

It’s that time of year again, when you start seeing predictions of how much online advertising will grow.
eMarketer is one of the credible and long-serving research firms who have recently made some bold predictions; most prominent of which is that online advertising is expected to finally exceed 5% of total advertising spend.
Although that’s a prediction for the US market, you can see such trends already in Europe; and it makes you wonder when we’ll see such developments in the Middle East!
So, media planners in Dubai, Beirut, Jeddah and everywhere else take note and let’s see more advertising spend on websites in the region.
Here’s the report. It’s a very good & long read with lots of graphs.
