Al Jazeera English …. how is it being received by the world?

AlJazeera English

The opening broadcast of Al Jazeera English was seen in 80 million households around the world and featured a clip introducing the channel.

How is Al Jazeera English being received by regional and international commentators and media organizations?

The Guardian’s Middle East editor said that “In contrast to CNN International’s appeal to globe-trotting business executives, Al-Jazeera English has a grassroots feel, oriented toward ordinary people in the non-Western world.”

There are also some familiar faces.

Former CNN International anchor-host Riz Khan will have an interactive-interview program on the new channel.

Veteran British TV interviewer Sir David Frost is the new channel’s biggest name. With a weirdly titled talk show, “Frost Over the World,” David Frost claims that prior to taking this job he “checked with the governments of the U.S. and Britain to be sure there were no links between Al-Jazeera and the terrorist organization al-Qaeda.”

Well, that’s comforting!

A political commentator from Gulf Research Center told the Gulf News that “The decision to launch an international, English-language news service, he noted, reflects Qatar’s desire to reinforce its regional role.”

Obviously, this channel is causing quite a stir. Stay tuned!

‘Water Campaign’ by du, making waves in the UAE

du

If you live in the UAE, there’s no escaping the massive du (the 2nd mobile operator) campaign now running through multiple media outlets. It’s the work of Leo Burnett -Dubai.

For the most part, it has been well received, but you may be wondering what it’s all about; and what’s the idea of that water effect rippling throughout?

Apparently, the campaign focuses on water as an analogy to express the telecom’s brand attributes.

A spokesperson for du’s brand campaign says that, “Water brings people together, it comes from inside us, it allows us to travel far, and it expresses itself with power or as a whisper. And of course, it is all around us in our daily life. This is how we see communication and we want to take it further.”

What do you think? Check out the du website

“Stop Secterianism” campaign in Lebanon

Stop Secterianism Before It Stops Us.

Controversial, but so true regarding secterianism in Lebanon.

I doubt it’s a media campaign, most probaby it’s just being circulated over the Internet.

It’s by an organization called 05 amam.

I’m assuming it started in 2005, hence the ‘o5′ in the name. We all know how tough 2006 has been for Lebanon. Hopefully, people will now pay attention to this campaign’s message

Ikbis, ‘presses’ into video sharing in Arabia

IKBIS

Tootcorp (owners of Arab bloggers community/aggeragror iToot.net) have launched Ikbis; the first Arab video and photo sharing web site.

It’s fully bilingual (Arabic/English), user friendly interface and an attractive Arabic brand.

Ikbis means ‘press’ or ‘click’ in Arabic and aims to become the No.1 destination for people across the region who want to store, organize, share and talk about their favourite video clips and photos online.

What does all this mean to advertisers?

Well, for a start, it will be a portal to advertise on….. but also to watch closely if users upload videos, commercials or any kind of materials realted to brands or products.

Very interesting and challenging times for marketers ahead…. don’t you think?
