80 million page views in one day on YouTube for Pirates 2 campaign
On Thurdsay 7 July, Walt Disney booked every page view (impression) available on YouTube- the world’s biggest video sharing site.
Disney ran banners for its latest blockbuster movie “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” and it has now been revealed that the company got 80 million page views in one day!
It’s a huge number, considering Disney used country targetting, therefore, it’s not even the full amount of pageviews availabe on YouTube in every country in the world.
The campaign included rich media banner ads featuring a panning close-up of “Pirates” star Johnny Depp alongside a digital clock counting down the hours, minutes, seconds, and milliseconds to the movie’s premiere today.
This stunning rise of YouTube, as ‘video goes viral’, is another example of future business models we can expect to see on the Internet.
In spite of it’s huge audience and high profile, YouTube is still losing money. If a couple more big advertisers learn from the Disney experiment, that could change soon.
