The organizors are running a promotion entitled “Where are the best ideas coming from?”, and it covers every aspect of the festival including Film, Press, Outdoor, Cyber and other categories.

It’s an interesting and live update of the best of the festival.

We’re glad to see the excellent work under the ‘Cyber’ category.

Obviously, we at AdBlogArabia are big believers in digital (cyber) media. Aren’t you?

Does award-winning advertising sell?

Award Winning Ideas Leo Burnett

Apparently, Leo Burnett Worldwide thinks so.

As part of the Cannes International Advertising Festival, which is grabbing everyone’s attention this week, Leo Burnett presented a seminar on “Wildfire Brands: Ideas that Spread and Sell”.

The seminar also built on Leo Burnett’s ongoing study entitled “Does Award-Winning Advertising Sell?”, proving that more than 86 percent of award-winning advertising actually increases sales.

Leo Burnett is one of the world’s most awarded agency networks. You’d expect them to preach the value of award-winning ideas.

In fairness, though, it makes sense and applies to award-winning advertisements of all agency networks in the world.

FIFA protects World Cup 2006 sponsors from ‘Ambush Marketing’

Holland Fans at World Cup 2006

As part of FIFA’s efforts to protect World Cup 2006 sponsors from ‘ambush’ or ‘hijack’ marketing by their competitors, FIFA took action against over 1,000 fans Dutch fans last Friday who arrived at Stuttgart’s stadium dressed in ‘branded’ clothing that promoted a Dutch beer company (Bavaria).

Seeing as American beer Budweiser is a sponsor of the World Cup, these fans were not allowed to enter the stadium, because millions of people would see them on TV promoting a competing brand.

They were given a choice to change their clothes or take them off.

So, the fans ended up watching the match in their underwear. It’s true.

You can read more about if at Soccernet or at the BBC webiste.

FIFA takes this matter very seriously, and still continues to screen fans entering stadiums.

These are the World Cup 2006 sponsors.

One of them is Emirates Airlines, so if any of you are at the World Cup and have a shirt with the logo of Elitihad, Gulf Air or any other airline, don’t wear it to a match. Unless you’d like to catch a cold :)

Pay TV in Middle East to grow

Irdeto Card

According to Informa’s report on “Telecoms & Media’s Middle East and North Africa TV”, the pay TV market in the region will grow by 47% over the next five years.

The region’s 5.3 million pay TV subscribers will grow to 7.7 million by 2011.

However, the study includes the big pay-TV markets of Turkey and Israel, so the figures may not be fully representative of the Arab Middle East; but they provide an indication of the situation.

There’s been an upheaval happening happening in the pay TV industry in the Middle East, mainly due to MBC Group’s strategy of offering free-to-air quality programming (on MBC2, 3 and 4) on par with that of subscription services like Showtime and Orbit.

ART figured out that exclusive sport programming was the way to grow in pay TV, and has succeeded in that field, and Al Jazeera now follows in its footsteps also with exclusive sports programming.

The Pay TV vs. Free To Air market in Middle East satellite TV is an interesting topic and if we get detailed figures and numbers, we’ll share them with you.

For now, read more about Informa’s research here.
